AUTHOR’S NOTES:

We all know that the world changed last week as Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine. Even if this somehow settles down to some sort of negotiation or a peaceful resolution, the events have awakened the world to the reality that we have been living in a fool’s paradise worrying more about the stock markets, the price of bread, our personal woes, while global events have now shown us the volcano bubbling beneath the surface just waiting for the moment of eruption.

I believe that Putin has seriously misjudged what he has gotten into. This will not end well for him. The inner circle surrounding him is beginning to feel the pain of the sanctions that Biden and the allies have placed on Russian banks, industry and trade. There certainly is an escalation in the war that is occurring as I write this, with tanks and Russian troops heading towards an invasion of the Ukrainian capital. Even the threat of nuclear weapons isn’t off the table. A nuclear strike would simply mean the end of life as we know it. But let’s look at this in as logical a manner as is possible. Autocrats live in fear. Their paranoia is profound and real, as the only power they have is the ability to threaten or decapitate an enemy.

When that threat becomes overwhelmingly unfathomable, it loses its force.  And that is what Stalin, Hitler, Mussolini and others learned through history. As the dictator ages, he becomes more frightened with the fragility of age and the combustible mental unsustainability that is the result of a crumbling structure. That is where Putin is at the moment. His world is based on a very limited perspective and the frailty of that point of view is becoming more obvious with each new sanction being put in place. But there are other issues to be considered now besides his strength and purpose. We are at a crossroads in human history where, once again, we will either support the concept of democracy or we will return to a period of autocrats and strong-armed tactics favored by men like Putin.

On February 20, 1939, just 6 ½ months before the Nazi invasion of Poland that began World War II more than 20,000 Nazi sympathizers held a massive rally in Madison Square Garden, New York City. With huge portraits of Hitler, and vehement anti-Semitic speeches the crowd booed references to F.D.R. and cheered references to the Nazi party. Afterwards, many marched uptown to East 86th Street and went East into what is called Yorkville (named after World War I hero, Sergeant York). In those days the neighborhood was referred to as Germantown, because of the many citizens of German descent. It has been my home, on and off, for more than 30 years. There are still some remnants of that era, a few restaurants and stores that reflect a time that is now history, but in the 1930s was current and profound. There was a large pacifist movement in America throughout the 30’s, and a strong pro-Nazi sentiment. Fascist demonstrations held by the German American Bund in this and other neighborhoods often ended in violent clashes, and it wasn’t until the U.S. entered the war in 1941 that they ceased. It’s important to remember that after Pearl Harbor, America only declared war on Japan. It was four days later on December 11th 1941 that Hitler declared war on the U.S. Today those who marched in support of Hitler today would be considered traitors. But because this is the United States of America, where free speech is cherished, they were allowed to hold their rallies and make the statements they believed. Such is democracy, that most fragile of mistresses.

Today we are seeing a few from one of our major political parties embrace the violent, destructive, illegal attack on Ukraine and cheering on Mr. Putin. Such is America, that they have the right to do so. Unfortunately if they have their way, in short order such freedoms would no longer exist in this country. I believe that anyone who supports Putin’s regime is a traitor – to America, to the rule of law, and to the freedom of a people to decide their fate without coercion or the threat of destruction. The battle lines have been drawn. On one side is democracy, with all of its warts and complications. On the other is dictatorship, oligarchy, repression. I applaud those Republicans who stood in solidarity during Joe Biden’s State of the Union address and cheered across party lines and personal distrust, in unity with President Zelensky – a hero – risking his life and his freedom to stand with his people, speaking to an oppressed population as it faces possible annihilation. We need to see his bravery for what it is. And we need to see the potential dangers facing a world where partisan divide could cripple all that we have built and fought for in the past 80 years. This battle is far from over, no matter what the outcome in Ukraine. Which way will America and the world go in the coming few years?

NEW MOON IN PISCES:

The New Moon falls on Wednesday March 2nd at 12:35 P.M. EST at 12 degrees Pisces 07 minutes. This is the last sign of the zodiac and a time for completions as we prepare for the New Year when the Sun enters Aries on March 20th. Pisces is a spiritual portal that opens the door to other worlds. I don’t really mean this in an ethereal sense as much as a functional one. We live on many planes and move from one to another frequently. When we dream we enter a separate reality. When we meditate we also move from one level of consciousness to another. We, in the West, tend to think of life as linear, but in fact it’s more fluid and changeable than that. This is a chance to give into the stream of awareness and allow your mind and soul to move from one level to another and you will understand the ways of time and space more clearly.

This is a moment when we must find faith and seek our clarity in many dimensions. The events occurring throughout the world are difficult to watch or to understand in our singular concept. It is only through the mutability and changeable perceptions mentioned above that it makes sense. When we are going through something it is our here and now. Once it has passed it becomes our history. Looking back and examining what the outcome of past events eventually were is one way we put things in perspective. But we need to also be flexible enough to absorb what is going on currently. This month will test our sense of charity and compassion. Not only for the people of embattled Ukraine, but for those in your circle who may need your help. It’s time to give openly and to find ways of expressing your love and concern. But it’s also a time to tie up loose ends and prepare for the start of the solar cycle in a few weeks as we once again begin our journey around the zodiac. The lesson of Pisces is: The more you give, the more you get.

MARS & VENUS CONJUNCT PLUTO:

On Thursday March 3rd at 3:43 A.M. EST & 12:56 P.M. EST the imminent conjunct of Venus & Mars that takes place on March 6th is preceded by each conjunct to Pluto. This will be a few days of intensity and deep rooted feelings. We will all experience this on some level. How you respond to it will decide which way this will manifest in your life. It’s important to keep an open mind and look at your relationships with an eye towards uncovering the truth and finding ways of repairing what is askew. Superficial answers will not suffice now. This is a time to rip off the bandage and allow the light and air to do its job rebuilding what is in disarray. Because of the retrograde motion of Venus this past few months it has spent a much longer than usual amount of time circling Mars. Now with the conjunct about to complete we are feeling the pressure of the male and female (or aggressive and receptive) energies throughout our society.

This is a moment of tension and pressure that the whole world is experiencing. Most of you know that America is going through its Pluto Return, an ominous aspect that portends power struggles and the release of pent up angst and hidden agendas. That is exactly what we are seeing in this debacle taking place in Ukraine. But lest we fall prey to narcissism and believe that America is the center of the universe let’s remember that this astrological events affect the entire world, not just our nation. And so, this conjunct of Venus & Mars to Pluto is having resounding influence over the whole globe. There isn’t a nation on earth that won’t be affected by the misplaced decisions Putin has made. Because today’s transits take place at the very end of Capricorn, right before Venus & Mars enter Aquarius, it will be restrictive and limited. As we are seeing, the advance of Russia’s military has been somewhat thwarted, though I don’t doubt that soon they will prove overwhelming to the limited forces the Ukrainians can mount in defense. But the conjunct of Venus & Mars actually takes place in early Aquarius in 3 days. That is when we will see even more explosive events and a shift in the energy the collective is dealing with.

On a personal level it’s important to separate your feelings from the collective. We are all experiencing the pressure of these terrible events, and it’s important to keep boundaries between the personal and the interpersonal, least we become overwhelmed by events outside of our control. Pay attention to your own situation, while still holding vigils for the Ukrainians and all of humanity. Do your best to satisfy what needs to be repaired in your life and give some focus to your relationships. They are the foundation of your strength and support. You can only help the world if you can help yourself first. Don’t forget that.

THE SUN CONJUNCTS JUPITER IN PISCES:

On Saturday March 5th at 9:06 A.M. EST this positive aspect completes. While this can be an optimistic and expansive energy there is the potential of blowing things out or proportion. With a little bit of restraint this can be a very productive and enthusiastic few days. I have some hopes that this will manifest as a moment of clarity and united as much of the world responds to the overt aggression Russia is demonstrating and push back against this unprecedented attack. While I don’t believe that a single quick moving aspects such as this will reverse the tides of war, there is the underlying optimism that just perhaps some cooler heads may prevail and some in Putin’s inner circle will take the chance to voice their opposition. In your life, try to make the most of this aspect. Take a walk, have a nice breakfast with a friend, or reach out in some way to show your support for humanity. Jupiter rules the law, and what is happening in the world is as much a smack in the face to the norms we have accepted for decades as anything we have seen in a very long time.

MARS & VENUS ENTER AQUARIUS AND CONJUNCT:

On Sunday March 6th at 1:23 A.M. EST & 1:30 A.M. EST these planets transition into erratic, unpredictable Aquarius. At 2:12 A.M. EST they will conjunct. Normally this is a rather benign aspect with some personal influence over our lives. But things are not normal and this may prove a more profound moment in history. Because of the retrograde motion of Venus over the past few months these two have been dancing together for some time. The conjoining of the male and female planets have had a rather tense result fueling some of the ongoing angst we are confronting. In our personal lives this is a time to find balance between the yin and yang, a leveling of the assertive and receptive energies that make up all of us. When that balance is maintained, it is easier to interact and we find a more sustainable set of rules to live with. But when they are out of whack, as now, and traveling through this rather explosive and unpredictable sign, we can expect some radical imbalance. To some extent this is adding to the situation in Europe. While I don’t believe that any one aspect leads to a world situation such as we are seeing in Ukraine, and I often warn my students and followers not to put too much emphasis on any one astrological event, when we add up what has been happening over the past two years we can see the dominoes tipping over, one by one, and leading us into this place of incomprehensible fear. The prayer is that cooler heads will prevail and this might be resolved without too much more bloodshed. That is my hope, and my plea to the universe.

MERCURY ENTERS PISCES:

On Wednesday March 9th at 8:32 P.M. EST until March 27th at 3:44 A.M. EDT Mercury joins the Sun, Jupiter & Neptune in this mutable water sign. This is a time of great caring and compassion, when the world is being called upon to make a stand against aggression and find our inner spirit. In your personal life this offers you an opportunity to express your feelings and your concern for those who need you. Reach out in your circle and give aid to anyone you can reach. A favorite quote of mine from Leo Tolstoy: “Everyone talks about changing the world; no one talks about changing themselves.” This is a time to make some alterations in your life that are within your power. You cannot stop the Sun from setting, nor change the course of history by yourself. But you can give a helping hand to those around you who are hurt, hungry, and frightened. Be gentle with others. When Mercury enters Aries later in March there will be time for a harsher and more direct approach. For now it is the hand of god that will move you and show you how best to work towards a better future.

THE SUN CONJUNCTS NEPTUNE IN PISCES:

On Sunday March 13th at 7:43 A.M. EDT this ongoing massive amount of Pisces energy continues with this difficult and confusing aspect. It only lasts about a day, but it can represent a turning point in history. This is often a bottom in the stock markets, whether that bottom hit last Friday or will occur in the coming week we cannot know. But as we head towards the Virgo Full Moon we will see the results clearly in the coming days. Any attempt at negotiations will probably fail. There isn’t the clarity needed to secure a deal or to clearly express what is at stake. But this is a time to express faith and compassion and to reach out from your soul to those within your circle. What you believe will have a strong effect on the outcome, and it is through that belief that you can influence others.

FULL MOON IN VIRGO:

This month lunar peak falls on Friday March 18th at 3:18 A.M. EDT at 27 degrees Virgo 40 minutes. This will be a watershed moment that will define this current lunar cycle more than most Full Moons. This is a time of sickness and healing, of confusion and clarity. The energy of Virgo and Pisces represents the polarity of the illness and the healer. Where Virgo tends to be overly critical and detail oriented, Pisces tends to be amorphic and undefined, existing on an ethereal plane without substance. That is one of the problems the world is facing now. Where is our solid footing, are we standing on hard ground or quicksand? What should we believe in, and how best can we achieve our purpose?

If there is a physical problem in the body, it may come to the surface now. This often happens on Full Moons, but especially on the Virgo – Pisces axis. Don’t ignore symptoms. Pay attention to anything your body is telling you. Use caution with alcohol and drugs (legal or illegal), and do what you can to help those around you. This can be a very trying few days when those in need are most vulnerable. Do what you can to help. But keep an eye on your own physical, mental and spiritual well-being.

THE SUN SEXTILES PLUTO:

On Friday March 18th at 3:37 P.M. EDT this sextile follows the Full Moon and sets the pace for the coming few weeks. This is a positive and useful aspect that will allow us to examine situations and find better solutions. Don’t be afraid to dig deeply into a subject. You may uncover some difficult truths or be forced to make a profound decision, but in the long run it will prove to your advantage. My hope is that the Full Moon was a peak in the ongoing situation in Europe, and just possibly it will begin to wane as the lunar peak passes. We are heading towards the New Moon on March 20th when the Sun enters Aries and begins its journey anew. Let’s hope that it will represent a restart that may allow us all to breathe a sigh of relief.

VENUS SQUARES URANUS:

On Saturday March 19th at 7:16 A.M. EDT we all need to be more aware of our surroundings. Any aspect to Uranus has the potential for explosive events; and with Mars about to create the square in three days this is a week when caution is most definitely called for. Of course this is true in your personal life and it would be wise to pay close attention to your environment and your relationships. If something has been brewing in the unconscious, it would be a good idea to keep an eye on it. Don’t be surprised by unexpected events or issues. That is just what Uranus is best at. But this isn’t telling you to live in fear. Rather it’s a moment when you can explore some ideas and look at unusual concepts and see the possibilities that are available. While the squares do represent energies outside of our control, they aren’t inherently evil, any more than any astrological aspect is. But this and the upcoming Mars square Uranus on March 22nd require our close attention and preparation.

THE SUN ENTERS ARIES: HAPPY NEW YEAR!

On Sunday March 20th at 11:33 A.M. EDT we begin the astrological New Year. For astrologers this is the beginning of the yearly cycle. As you know, there are a number of “New Year’s” around the globe. The West chooses January 1st, a rather mundane date left over from the Romans. The Chinese use the New Moon that falls between January 21st and February 20th. Many different cultures have their idea of when to celebrate the changing from the old into the new, and each has its reason. But for astrologers it is when the Sun enters the first sign of the zodiac at zero degrees Aries. It is with some trepidation that we enter this new period with the world so on edge. Will this shift be particularly harsh with the realities we are viewing on the world’s stage? Or will this represent an ending of hostilities and a hopeful new beginning?

As individuals we cannot change the world. We can band together and create a collective force that might move things or influence the outcome. It’s important that we find optimism and faith in this aspect. With each beginning there is an end. With each end there is the chance for a better future. We are entering the next phase of human history and with it new challenges and possibilities are being offered. Take advantage of them and let your soul be free and untethered.

MERCURY CONJUNCTS JUPITER:

On Monday March 21st at 2:06 A.M. EDT we have a day of optimism and faith. This won’t change the world, but it could allow you to express yourself in an outgoing and expansive manner. This is a time to say what’s on your mind. It will be difficult not to, and you may find that you and others are speaking without the usual filters. A bit of caution is advised as things could get blown out of proportion. But it would be a shame to limit or frustrate that desire to express your inner feelings. Just try to think things through before they come out of your mouth. With a little patience you could say things that you’ve wanted to say for some time but have felt restricted.

MARS SQUARES URANUS:

On Tuesday March 22nd at 4:44 P.M. EDT this explosive and dangerous square will put us all on edge. This isn’t a time to take things lightly or to assume that things are ordinary or standard. We are at a tipping point in history that can go either way. Will we see a marked escalation in the hostilities in Ukraine, or a clash of world powers that will deescalate the situation? This is a moment that can explode without boundaries or limitation, or it can be the final popping of the pimple that allows healing to begin. My hope, of course, is that this will be the final push towards some sort of solution. Only time will tell. I’m not going to predict either an explosive catastrophe, or a sudden peaceful resolution. This aspect demands our close scrutiny and because of its potentially volatile nature, we should all be on our guard. Avoid any troubling situation and don’t let someone goad you into an argument or useless fight. Once this passes the energy will settle down rather quickly. And it is certainly possible that this will prove to be the peak of that energy. I pray that is so. Use caution and stay vigilant. But don’t assume the worst.

MERCURY CONJUNCTS NEPTUNE:

On Wednesday March 23RD at 1:44 P.M. EDT much confusion and misdirection will ensue. Pay close attention to details. This is easily a moment when mistakes and misunderstandings can occur, and if you aren’t careful you could find yourself stuck in a quagmire from which it will be difficult for you to extricate yourself. Take some extra time to explain your thoughts and ideas. Don’t assume that the other guy understands you. When Neptune is active, confusion and misdirection are common. Be as clear and direct as you can. If you’re traveling, make certain that you know where you’re going and have a backup contingency plan. Double check your GPS, your directions and make certain that your cell phone is charges, your car is in good working order, and you have all that you need to ensure a safe and pleasant journey. This can be a very spiritual few days, and there is the chance that you may have an adventure that can be profound and enlightening. I hope you do.

MERCURY ENTERS ARIES:

On Sunday March 27th at 3:44 A.M. EDT until Sunday April 10th at 10:09 P.M. EDT Mercury will be traveling through this more assertive and outspoken sign. Things that have been kept hidden or unsaid may finally be brought to active consciousness and there could be a breakthrough in negotiations in your personal life and on the world stage. Mercury has been traveling through foggy Pisces for the past 3 weeks, and now it is entering direct and assertive Aries. Expect people to say what’s on their minds and to be forceful and even confrontational. If you meet them half-way you can accomplish much and get things said that have needed to be expressed. Just be careful not to be overly pushy or too aggressive.

VENUS CONJUNCTS SATURN:

On Monday March 28th at 3:27 P.M. EDT this rather dour aspect will limit your activities. This isn’t a bad thing, but it can feel restrictive and at times unfulfilling. It’s the perfect aspect for ending a lunar cycle. On April 1st the next New Moon will occur at 11 degrees Aries and it will be an important one. This has been a very rough month, well a very rough 2 years if truth be told. And it’s time to hit the reset button. This is a day or so when it would be best to relax and take things in stride. You probably won’t be overly energetic, and a brief stay-cation wouldn’t be a bad thing. When the New Moon hits, we will all get a jolt of extra energy. So for now, put your feet up, have a cup of tea or wine, and watch an old movie you’ve been meaning to see. I have a list of recommendations if you wish.

DARK OF THE MOON:

The next New Moon falls on Thursday April 1st at 2:24 A.M. EDT at 11 degrees Aries 31 minutes. The day or two leading up to it will be a particularly low energy period. If you tend to be emotional this may be a very trying time each month. I have found that people with prominent moons or a Cancer Sun, Moon or ascendant respond to the lunar cycles more intensely than others. Spend this time finishing up anything that is incomplete, don’t try to initiate new projects on a waning moon, it just won’t work out. Once the New Moon hits you begin new projects or attempt a new approach to an existing problem. If you have been living in a situation or involved in a relationship that is intolerable or has outlived its usefulness this would be the proper time to move on with your life. If you have been working on a project that is almost complete but you seem to lack the energy for the finality, you must push during these low energy days to end the matter once and for all. If you don’t, when the New Moon arrives it will bring this “dead” energy along with it and conflict with the newer force being presented. Each month we are offered a chance to clean house, so to speak.

Below is a list of times this month when the Moon is Void of Course and neither important decisions nor purchases should be made during these periods. The Void of Course Moon is a time when we should try to center ourselves and deal with spiritual matters not materialistic ones. Any decisions made on the VC Moon will not turn out the way we had expected.

The Moon is Void of Course from the time it makes its last major aspect in a sign until it enters the next sign. For example, if the Moon squares Mars at 27 degrees Aries and then has no more aspects until it enters Taurus it will be Void of Course for three degrees or about 6 hours. The aspects used are the conjunction, sextile, square, trine, and opposition. All times are Eastern Time:
